Marketing Standards
Marketing Guide

Marketing your production needs to happen alongside making the work. Your company remains responsible for actively building an audience.

REQUIRED BEFORE SALE

  • Completed Show Marketing Form.
  • Text-free Box Office marketing image.
  • Text-free square / Instagram image.
  • Text-free Instagram Story image, normally 1080 x 1920px.
  • A2-format poster artwork in line with current Marketing Standards.
  • Press release in PDF format.
  • A printed A2 poster should be supplied before the opening week.

Complete Marketing Form

ARTWORK + IMAGES

  • All artwork should follow the current Marketing Standards.
  • The venue should be referred to as "The Lion & Unicorn Theatre".
  • The theatre logo must not be cropped, stretched, skewed or altered.
  • Images should be high quality and rights cleared.
  • Credit photographers wherever possible.
  • Rehearsal and production photography helps keep marketing fresh.

SOCIAL MEDIA

  • Follow and tag @LandUTheatre.
  • Use your company's social channels consistently throughout the sales period.
  • Share rehearsal photography, video, trailers and other relevant content.
  • Be clear about what makes your production distinctive and why audiences should see it.

PRESS + COMPS

  • Provide a press release and suitable production or rehearsal images.
  • Press and industry comps are available subject to theatre approval.
  • Comp requests should normally be submitted at least 48 hours before the performance.

PROGRAMMES

  • Digital programmes are encouraged where practical.
  • QR codes can be used to provide programme information.
  • The theatre does not provide on-site programme printing.
  • Any programmes being distributed should be provided to the Duty Manager.

CONTENT WARNINGS

Where audiences may reasonably need advance information about material within the production, provide a clear content warning in the marketing information and at the venue.

BUILDING YOUR AUDIENCE

  • Use the networks of your cast, creatives and company.
  • Speak directly to friends, family, colleagues and relevant communities.
  • Support and network with other theatre makers.
  • Give audiences a clear reason to choose your production.
  • Dedicate time to promoting the work as well as creating it.
Technical Rider + Pre-Arrival Requirements

TECH RIDER

All productions should submit a fully completed Technical Rider no later than seven days before the opening performance.

ARRANGE BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

  • Any requested seating reconfiguration.
  • Significant changes to the lighting rig.
  • External sound or technical equipment.
  • Projection requirements.
  • Smoke, haze, vaping or other effects.
  • Weapons, high-risk props or unusual scenic requirements.

All companies should arrange appropriate insurance covering themselves and the other members of their company.

  • The standard configuration must be reinstated at get-out.

Projector
  • Projector installed in the lighting grid.
  • HDMI and VGA inputs run from the technical desk.
  • Bring your own laptop adaptor if required.
  • Switch the projector off with its remote before powering down the technical desk.
  • The projector must not be moved or refocused.
  • The Venue Guide specifies a £15 daily projector charge where applicable under contract.

  • House lights: Channel 8.
  • DSL LED: 150 Red, 151 Green, 152 Blue, 153 Amber.
  • DSR LED: 160 Red, 161 Green, 162 Blue, 163 Amber.

  • Back bars use channels 190-192 and 195-197.

Electrical Safety + Effects
  • The grid is for standard lighting fixtures only.
  • It must not be used for lifting or supporting heavy loads.
  • Suspended equipment must have secure fixing and a secondary safety bond.
  • Keep cable runs tidy, protected and free of trip hazards.
  • Smoke, haze and vaping effects require advance approval.
  • Naked flames and flammable materials are not permitted.
  • High-risk props require advance notification, appropriate risk assessment and insurance.

The practical operating journey once your company arrives at the theatre.

Get-In Day
1
Meet the Duty Manager

Get-ins usually begin at 10.00 on the morning of your first day. Meet the Duty Manager before work begins.

Complete the induction

Access, fire procedures, technical operation, dressing room and venue rules.

Load in

Set comes through the back door via the theatre access route through the garden.

Confirm the setup

Check seating, lighting, sound, projection and any approved effects.

Begin your session

Once the induction is complete, your company can begin work.

During Your Run
  • The theatre manages Box Office and Duty Management.
  • Doors and Box Office typically open around 15 minutes before the performance.
  • Your show should be ready well before the published start time.
  • Agree the latecomer procedure with the Duty Manager.
  • Keep the theatre, technical areas and shared dressing room clean and tidy.
  • Do not tamper with air-conditioning or heating controls.
  • Report faults or damage promptly.
Get-Out

Remove

Take away set, props, costumes, food, rubbish and personal items.

Reset the room

Reinstate the standard thrust seating configuration and seat colour blocking.

Reset technical equipment

Restore the standard lighting rig and sound configuration, and clear the technical desk.

Clean

Leave the theatre and dressing room clean, tidy and free of rubbish.

Sign off

Check the venue with the Duty Manager before leaving.

TROUBLESHOOTING.

Follow the relevant chain before changing settings or reconnecting equipment.

FOLLOW THE CHAIN.

Think logically, check what changed and avoid randomly pressing buttons or repatching cables.

No Sound?
  1. Check power.
  2. Check the playback source is actually playing.
  3. Check the source is connected to the correct mixer channel.
  4. Check mixer power, channel level, routing, mute state and master level.
  5. Check amplifier power and levels.
  6. If using QLab, confirm the correct output is selected on both the Mac and QLab.
Radio Mic?
  1. Check microphone power.
  2. Check the AA battery.
  3. Check receiver power.
  4. Check microphone and receiver channels match.
  5. Check receiver level, mixer channel, master and amplifier.
No Lights?
  1. Check power.
  2. Check dimmers, fuses and breakers.
  3. Check LED wash power.
  4. Check the lighting desk and monitor are powered on.
  5. Check the desk is in the correct mode.
  6. Check Master, Memory Master and Blackout.
Projector?
  1. Check projector and source power.
  2. Check HDMI / VGA connection and any adaptor.
  3. Check the projector input source.
  4. Check the computer is sending an external display signal.
Still Stuck?

Stop changing things and speak to the Duty Manager. Do not dismantle or attempt to repair venue equipment.

Stage 7

SETTLEMENT.

Bank details, positive settlements and guarantee shortfalls after your run.

MONEY DUE TO YOU

Make sure we have your current bank details.

The theatre has up to 28 days to pay a positive box office settlement.

GUARANTEE SHORTFALL

Where box office income does not meet the minimum guarantee, the outstanding balance is due to the theatre within 14 days.
